Decades ago, polio outbreaks were a constant threat around the world. After the introduction of polio vaccines by Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin and a steadfast immunization effort, these outbreaks became part of history in most of the world.
Yet many still live under the threat of polio, which is why Rotary and its global partners are committed to reaching every child with the vaccine and ending this disease worldwide.
Major gains have been made in the global fight against polio:
- In the 1980s, 1,000 children were infected by the disease every day in 125 countries. Today, polio cases have declined by 99 percent, with fewer than two thousand cases reported in 2006.
- Two billion children have been immunized, five million have been spared disability, and over 250,000 deaths from polio have been prevented.
- Challenger League
The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.

Educators see thrid grade as the divinding line between leaning to read and reading to learn. Over 9,606,878 children have received a dictionary thanks to the generosity of sponsors like the Vineland Rotary Club who have participated in the Dictionary Project. Sponsors provide a dictionary for the children in their community each year, so they can enjoy the benefits of a large vocabulary.
2,330,715 dictionaries were given to students in 2008 as a gift from people who live in their town.
The Vineland Rotary Club has donated over 1500 dictionaries to third graders in the Vineland and Millville areas as part of this nationwide project.
