Bill Plick fined Ted Lane for Betsy’s slip up of almost forgetting him. John Wisda was fined $5.00 as his welcome to Rotary. Bradley’s welcome cost him $6.00 because he got a smile from the Plickster. There were a number of other fines to up our budget.

Program:
Ron Barisano, our membership chair, introduced two new members for their classification talks.

JAYNE ST. JOHN
Jayne St. John, who clarified her name for us, was the first speaker. Jayne gives much credit to her Mom for raising her family single handedly after a drunk driver killed her Father. After graduating from CCC, Jayne went into the banking business. She spent 21 years with Minotola Bank working her way up. For the last two years, she has been with Century Savings, Landis Avenue Branch, as Assistant Vice President.

Jayne is involved in many organizations, and has already thrown herself into many projects for Rotary. She married her soul mate last year and they reside in Newfield.
She thanked Bob Swanson for sponsoring her into Rotary and is very proud to be a part of our club.

MARIA AVILES
Our next speaker was Maria Aviles. Maria’s sponsor into Rotary is Shaye Kotok.
Maria introduced her daughter, Ruby, who was in attendance. Maria was a high school drop out and a victim of teenage pregnancy. She was born in Puerto Rico and moved here with her family as a young child. When she got pregnant in high school she was faced with a difficult decision. She opted to have her baby and keep her, and got much support from her family. Maria also has a son. Over the years, Maria worked at many different jobs to support her children. She found out about a program for Hispanic dropouts through Cumberland County Freeholders, and graduated from CCC. With that education, she felt she had much better opportunities.

She entered a Training Work Force Program and found out about a position in the Girl Scouts. She has been with them for 22 years. With Les and Shaye Kotok as her mentors, Maria established a Latch Key Program in Vineland. She credits the Kotoks with playing a major role in her life. She learned from Les, how to put fundraising projects together. She became involved with many organizations and community networking, helping special needs girls, organizing Girl Scout Troops, and much, much more.

In 1989, she had an opportunity to move to Germany as Director of Membership. She spent five years there and traveled extensively with her children. When she returned, she earned her B.S. from Stockton College. She is now a Membership Specialist with the Girl Scouts. She is very happy to be a Rotarian.

Henry Hanson announced that the next Pedals for Progress would be held on September 27 from 9am to 1pm. Henry began to say, “If you see any bicycles that are in fair condition…” and as he paused, Shaye Kotok finished his sentence comically, by saying “Steal them!” After a group chuckle, Henry continued to encourage club members to collect bikes and portable or treadle sewing machines for the 27th.

Linda Foster had a few announcements related to fundraising:
1. She reminded members to purchase and sell the Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” shopping passes for $5 apiece.

Finemaster:
Bill Plick had a full list of fines to levy today. First to get tagged was MaryJane Kinkade, who was fined $5 for having her picture published in a newspaper. Marty Hoag was asked to explain his jacket (a special jacket given to him to mark his many years as a member in good standing). Bill was satisfied with the brevity of the explanation ad was only fined $2. New member Jeanette Block was given a reprieve since Bill fined her last week. He did, however, welcome Sam Boutros to the club with a friendly $5 fine. Bill Jannarone, who arrived late, paid Bill a $2 fine for being late. But since he paid Bill in the Men’s room and placed the $2 on the sill as Bill was leaving, he was fined an extra $5. Keith Petrosky was fined $3 since his beloved Yankees are in third place. Mike Loyle was asked to explain – as briefly as possible – what a Lebowskiesta is. Mike said it was a festival held at the bowling alley and was themed around the move “The Big Lebowski,” a cult favorite. Apparently not happy with the length or clarity of the answer, Bill fined Mike $5. Carl Kirstein and Ted Lane were each issued $2 fines for making jokes from the peanut gallery earlier in the meeting. Bill asked the club members in attendance to raise their hands if they knew Earl Everett. All who had their hands in the air were charged a $1 fine.

Program:
Featured Speaker — Dr. Joseph Bernardini

Ted Lane introduced today’s speaker, Dr. Joe Bernardini, who spoke to the group about two different back/spinal ailments and the kinds of treatments he provides in those cases.
Dr. Bernardini explained that kyphoplasty is a treatment for vertebral/spine compression fractures due to Osteoporosis or cancer. These compression fractures become more common as we age and are more prevalent in post-menopausal women, Bernardini said.
Osteoporosis is a disease effecting bone mass. Each year, 700,000 vertebral compression fractures occur, resulting in long hospital stays ad costing $50 million dollars each day in the United States. It is difficult to see these fractures, even with x-rays. They are often misdiagnosed as a sprain. Therefore, a radiological assessment should be done with a lateral spine x-ray; MRI’s are also very useful in identifying compression fractures of the spine.

The upper curve of the spine and lower arc are the high-concentration areas where these fractures occur most often. With the use of oral steroids the risks are increased. These fractures affect the lungs as well as put pressure on the lungs. There is a two-to-three-fold increase in pulmonary mortality rates in patients with vertebral compression fractures.
The procedure used by Dr. Bernardini to treat the fractures is Balloon Kyphoplasty. Up until recently, this affliction went untreated. Now the choices are to either wear a spinal brace for three months or have a same-day procedure done. He prefers to do the procedure under general anesthesia. The procedure stabilizes the fracture and corrects spinal deformity. Typically, the procedure takes an hour (per treated fracture) and can be a same-day procedure, though in some cases, patients may be required to stay overnight in the hospital. Most often, the procedure results in immediate pain relief.

Dr. Bernardini also spoke about X-Stop, a treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal). There is an 11% incidence rate for this spinal injury in the United States and it is more frequently diagnosed in older patients. Lumbar spinal stenosis results in pressure on nerves in the spine. Feeling of pain in the back and hips are typical symptoms. Treatments available include analgesics, NSAIDS (like Motrin), changing your activity, exercise, weight loss, etc. Other treatments include the X-Stop implant procedure, which can be done under local or general anesthesia. The X-Stop device is a titanium metal implant designed to fit between the spinous processes of the vertebrae in your lower back.

His pride and joy is his daughter Nikki. She is an attorney and is currently working as assistant city council in Ft. Lauderdale where she lives with her husband Dr. Steven Sacks.

Michael held many various jobs over the years in many different fields; from schoolteacher, to accountant, to working in industry. The last 25 years prior to his retirement, he was senior accountant for Cumberland County Social Services. Michael is involved in politics and sits on many boards and is active in many organizations. Michael is proud to be a Rotarian. Welcome to Rotary. We know you will be an asset.

The second part of today’s program was Linda Lanzalone. She was part of the GSE team that went to Hungary this year. Linda’s goal is to travel the world. She has been to 30 different countries and all through the U.S. The GSE program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women in their initial years of professional life.

Rotarian team members and one Rotarian leader, traveled for 4-6 weeks staying in the homes of Rotarians when possible. Linda and the other team members found the Hungarian Rotarians very warm and welcoming. The team consisted of five members; two women and three men of various ages and professions. It was a wonderful experience for Linda and her team.

Program: Bob Swanson introduced Mike Epifanio for his classification speech. Mike handed out copies of this week’s Grapevine, hot off the presses. He is editor and publisher of this weekly community paper. Mike joined Rotary in April and was sponsored by Bob Swanson. Mike was first introduced to Rotary 21 years ago when Keith Petrosky brought him to a meeting when he was in high school.

Mike began his publishing career 16 years ago. He worked for the Cumberland News and then went on to become the editor of A.C. Magazine in 1996. Over the years he learned the publishing business inside out. About a year ago, he pursued his longtime dream of starting his own publication. After much research he resigned from his job and began his paper in January.

On February 13, “The Grapevine” was launched. Mike feels he is “Living the Dream”. He feels his paper is special because it is truly a community paper. It offers localized information and he encourages people to make suggestions for topics they would like to see covered in the paper. There is approximately a 50-50 ratio of ads to articles. Distribution is free to every resident in Vineland. The paper is mailed weekly.

What makes the Grapevine unique? It is 100% about Vineland, it has a clean design, and it is distributed free to all Vinelanders. Mike thanked his family for all their help and support. He is also proud to be a Rotarian.

Program: Gus Foster introduced our guest speakers, Joseph Isabella from the Vineland Municipal Electric Utility. Mr. Isabella is the director. He brought with him, Mrs. Lisa Lucena, from the City of Vineland Media Relations department.

The City’s plans are for energy independence. The Vineland Electric building was built in 1899. It services approximately 55,000 people, 161 megawatts, and 130 employees.

Core Value: Keep the Electric Utility city owned, maintaining the Utility jobs and economic stimulus provided by the utility to the community.

Strategic Objectives: Maintain and enhance system reliability. Provide and maintain the lowest possible signature and insure compliance with all applicable EPA and DEP requirements. We want to make Vineland the environmental steward.

Action Plan:
1. Maintain and enhance system reliability
· Construct a new substation in the area of Chestnut Avenue and Lincoln Avenue (East Vineland). Assumes Atlantic Electric builds the 138 KV transmission lines.
· Upgrade the West Substation Transformer.
· Upgrade 69 KV line between West Vineland (VMEU) and Sherman Substation (ACE.)
· Overhaul Central Substation switchgear and breakers.

Energy and Capacity in PJM (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland Interconnection): An overview of PJM including energy and capacity markets for the VMEU in the PJM system. Our energy delivers through our transformer system through PJM. It’s like an energy highway with tolls. Capacity is the capability to generate electricity. We are 80 megawatts short so we pay 6 million to PJM to cover our load.

2. Provide and maintain the lowest possible customer cost
· Utilize the city’s inherent competitive advantages of low cost financing, city owned sites and existing workforce to provide capacity and congestion relief, thereby minimizing rates. Immediately invest the necessary funds to insure the safe and reliable operation of existing units through 2012. Vineland Electric currently does not have good strategic positioning. We do not have energy resources to control cost.
· Install dual fuel (natural gas primary, #2 oil back up) 50 to 60 mw simple cycle Gas Turbine generation at the Down station by May 31, 2012. The unit will begin to alleviate the current capacity deficiency and significantly reduce congestion.
· Continue to invest in standardized efficient peaking gas turbine generating units to replace existing aging units subsequent to 2012 and keep pace with load growth.

3. Reduce the Utility’s environmental signature and insure compliance with all applicable EPA and DEP requirements
· Convert #10 from coal to natural gas or biomass fuel by 2012.
· Initiate a significant renewable energy project (solar, wind, biofuel) in Vineland during year one.
· New gas turbine generation project will be leading edge in terms of pollution controls and efficiency.

Economic Impact:
· One (1) New Unit – Approximately $60,000,000 installed cost.
· Equates to $160/mw day capacity cots.
· $.5mm/yr savings over capacity market.
· $7.5 mm/yr energy savings estimate from congestion/marginal loss relief. (cost model)
· Will require no increase in staffing levels.

Next Steps:
· PJM Interconnection Studies
· Bonding Ordinance
· Referendum
· Equipment Design
· Air Permit
· Bidding
· Construction
· Commercial Operation

Finemaster: Bill Plick warned that President Betsy’s buyout covers normal levels of abuse. Tread lightly Betsy. Fines were given to Nick Wypych as a “Welcome to Rotary” fine, Bob Swanson, and Jody Hirata.

Program: Ted Lane introduced our guest speakers, Frank Felsberg from Cogent Training & Consulting, LLC. His topic was on helping businesses communicate more effectively. Did you know that while people usually buy from people they like, they also buy from people who listen to them? Most salespeople think selling is all about making good sales pitches. That’s only part of it. It’s also about listening…listening to the needs and concerns of the prospect…and fulfilling them. Your customers and prospects are starved for someone who’ll listen to them. Most people listen at only about 25% efficiency. Poor listening is costing your business thousands (if not millions) of dollars in revenue.

Listening Tips:
· Seek out areas of personal interest from what is being said.
· Don’t be turned off by poor delivery. Concentrate on the content of what is being said.
· Don’t enter into an argument or make a judgment until you have total comprehension.
· Listen for concepts and main ideas.
· Be flexible in how you summarize what the speaker is saying.
· Show the speaker that you are interested and be active in your listening behavior.
· Overcome distractions.
· Learn to listen to and assimilate information that is demanding in scope and difficulty. Don’t limit yourself to material that is easy to understand.
· Don’t get hung up on emotionally charged works.
· Listen with your mind. Thought is faster than speech so anticipate, weigh evidence, listen to, and interpret the speaker’s tone of voice and implications.
· Mentally summarize.

Questions to ask yourself:
· Are you lively or dull when you talk?
· Do you speak in a monotone voice and without enthusiasm?
· Do you get to the point quickly and engagingly or do you belabor points?
· Do you pontificate or do you ask others how they feel about a subject?
· Do you talk more than you listen?

Time we spend communicating: 40% Listening; 35% speaking; 9% writing; 16% reading.
Listening is the cornerstone of communication. Hearing uses our 5 senses, listening is an ART. We have become a nation of talkers. The opposite of talking is waiting to talk. Guideline for busy talkers is to know what you want to say and be conscience of your body language.

We all listen through filters. Filters are things such as memories, values, attitudes, images past and future, beliefs, assumptions, strong feelings, and expectations, past experiences, prejudices, and our physical environment. A good sales person knows how to listen. If you suspect people aren’t listening to you, ask yourself questions. Cicero said, “There’s an art in silence. There’s an eloquence in it also.”

Pledge of Allegiance, singing of God Bless America as well as the 4 way test were led by Shirley Burke.

President Betsy Frank called up Sergeant of Arms, Bruce Middleton. Bruce gave a welcome to our newest members: Mike Epifanio and Michael Cyter. Vineland Club members with Guests: Mike Loyle with his son, JD Loyle, and guest Nick Wypych.

Birthdays this week: Phil Lirio, July 8th and Gerry Dooley, July 13th.

Announcements: President Betsy announced that at the Board orientation meeting, it was discussed that Ed Duffy had long established a tradition of bringing his children to Rotary before the start of the school year. He actions have inspired the “Bring Your Child to Rotary Day” event. The event will be held on September 2nd so we encourage you to bring your child, grandchild, foster child, and/or “little” to the meeting. Thank you, Ed!

We will also be recognizing members for “Perfect Attendance”. We will start this recognition in September and hold it quarterly for the remainder of the Rotary year: December, March 2009, and June. Members with 100% attendance will be picked from a hat and will have the following quarter free from fines that they may acquire from the Finemaster.

The September 27th, Cruisin Down the Maurice River event, has been SOLD OUT.

Please check the phone directory for accuracy and call Gail if it needs to be updated. Henry Hanson requested that more cell phone numbers be available to members.

Linda Foster announced that the Night Golf Outing at the Eastlyn Golf Course would take the place of our weekly meeting on October 14th. She promised that it would be a lot of fun and at the same time it would be helping our Polio Plus cause.

Finemaster: Bill Plick gave so many fines today that there were too many to mention.

Program: Ted Lane introduced our guest speaker, Chapman Vail. Mr. Vail is the past president of the Woodstown Rotary Club, and the owner of Holistic Homes, LLC. He is located in Woodstown, NJ and his company holds the Green Advantage Environmental Certification for residential in New Jersey. His interest in “green” started about 2 years ago when he purchased land in Woodstown and subdivided it. His wanted to do something that would impact the town positively and would make the town proud.

He broadened his interest in “green” through research and found that GREEN means a lot of things. Green can mean 1. Energy efficiency, 2. Land preservation, 3. Water conservation. Many of our existing homes may be considered “sick” homes. Maybe because of a bad heating/ventilation system, or water leakage that causes mold. About two thirds of our homes are “sick” homes.

Going “green” can’t just be a fad. We need to evolve away from the use of petroleum-based products and broaden our “green” culture. Typically, a “Green” house has to look the way people are used to seeing homes. Architecturally, it has to match the community.

Conversion of our present day homes can be done through conservation. Conserve by upgrading your windows, insulation (spray), and change to water saving faucets, showerheads, and toilets. Use “energy star” rated appliances. A “green” home is approximately 10% more that the average $300,000.00 home.

New Jersey is ripe for “green”. We already have water conservation and land preservation in place. New Jersey already has an informed public, so please do your part and start conserving now.

Finemaster: Bill Plick with his assistant, Norm Neill, presented new President Betsy with an option to buy-out for the year for $200.00, or take her chances meeting to meeting. She opted for the buy-out. Ted Lane was fined $2.00, $2.00 to Dick Prochaska, $5.00 to Mike Loyle for BOOing. Bill didn’t fine Sherry Kejzman because he liked the lunch menu. Last but not least, Ken Dondero was fined $2.00 for giving a “cheesy” induction.

Program: As the first meeting of the new administration, President Betsy, decided to bring back the “Joke of the Day” presented by our own Pat Procaccino. Thank you, Pat, for your great sense of humor. President Betsy asked committee chairpersons to present their committee/responsibilities to the membership.

Treasurer (Club): Bonnie Laube – Bonnie explained the Senior Billing Policy to the members. Anyone that fits the parameters can fill out the application and get it to her. Our dues have increased $50.00 for the year. We haven’t seen an increase in years and this is to help offset the increases imposed by the District.

Treasurer (Charities): Dave Schad – Dave explained that the club has 2 separate accounts. The Club account that Bonnie handles takes care of our dues and meals and miscellaneous expenses. The Charities account encompasses the fundraisers, payouts to specific causes, scholarships, etc.

The Club will be hosting its 35th annual Valentines Day Party at the Vineland Developmental Center, East Campus. Approximately 25 to 30 ladies from the Center participate. We have a DJ, food, and a gift for each Center participants. We are currently looking for a new chairperson for the event, as well as a sponsor. Anyone interested contact Dave.

Club Administration: Hope Brolis – Hope expressed her honor to take this position. She thanked Bruce Middleton and Dave Schad for taking care of the duties of attendance and setting up for every meeting. She also thanked Rob Tola and Bill Plick for taking charge of the Golf Outing. Promoting “fellowship” was her most important focus this year. Gail Marino was handling the “Jersey Boys” trip and “Cruisin Down the Maurice River.” Hope said she wanted the membership to offer ideas, and encouraged membership involvement.

Membership: Ron Barisano – Ron thanked Ken Dondero for his years of service as membership committee chairman. The membership committee will steward each new member, for the first three months of their membership, introducing them to the board members, helping them get adjusted to the club, get them to orientation/fireside chat, invite them to membership committee meetings, and give them the opportunity to join a committee as an active member. This year’s plan is to have quarterly events with new members. The membership committee will be working closely with the Public Relations Committee. Dave Schad has a tent to set up at events. The committee is working on information cards for new members. Membership will contact all new members within 48 hours to welcome them and answer questions about the club and membership. Ken Dondero has really not retired; Ken will be working with Jay Parks on a DVD for new member orientation.

Fundraising: Linda Foster – Fundraising is what drives Rotary. It’s what supports all of our charities. The following events are as follows:
· Night Golf Outing – Norm Neill, Chair – to be earmarked for Polio Plus, need gift bags items as giveaways.
· Holiday Winetasting – December 4th at Centerton Country Club, Hope Brolis, Chair for Silent Auction
· Dream Date Raffle – February 10th, needs a chairperson and someone to sponsor tickets
· Talent Show – May 2nd at Centerton Country Club, will start the committee in the fall.
· Holiday Wreath Sales – Bonnie Laube and Karen Bauman. Was a great success last year.

Public Relations: Melanie Druziako – Public Relations is the responsibility of each Rotarian. We encourage all Rotarians to wear their pins proudly, understand, discuss, and share the good works of the club and Rotary with non-Rotarians through personal and professional contacts. This will have a positive benefit to our club by recruiting new members and volunteers, retaining current member, and raising the club’s profile in the community thus increasing its service potential. Please clip any articles about Rotary events, members in the news, and save them for us. If we promote “EVENTS” will have great success in all we do.

Bonnie Laube, Treasurer, was not able to make the installation dinner. Immediate Past President Bill Dudley presented her with a gift. He said she’s the “girl with the Midas Touch.” He thanked her for serving on the board. We love you Bonnie!!

He emphasized that Gangs do exist in our county and there are ongoing programs to educate the community as well as a task force to deal with problems that arrise. He stated that some of the key reasons youths associate with gangs is because they are seeking adult supervision, looking for challenging activities and want a place they belong.

Mark reports that communities need to provide psoitive programs that satisfy those needs and focus on reducing the conditions in the community that lead youths to seek gang membership. Some of thse conditions include: lack of adult supervision, lots of free time, places are readily available for youths to meet without adult supervision, and limited job and career access.

1. At the District Conference he heard William Patchett speak about the success of Rotary’s Polio Plus program. Patchett was the representative from Rotary President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson. Polio has been contained to only 4 countries from 140, and last year there were less than 1,000 new cases compared to 250,000 when Rotary started the program.
2. Leila Crawford spoke at the conference as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. She is now a full-time Assistant Professor of English at Atlantic Cape Community College. Said the scholarship changed her life and she now promotes Rotary to a mixed student body, requiring public service as a part of her courses.
3. ABC News’ Charlie Gibson recently did a story on refugees in Kenya. Their tent city tents were supplied by Rotary.
4. Vineland Rotary finally experienced their “Field of Dreams”, the dream became reality on Saturday, April 19th. We had our first Challenger League game. A long time coming, the dream was started by Charlie Cunningham and continued by Past President Al Marsh, both Vineland doctors. Donations of $50 from Al, $50 from our club and $50 from Green Acres started the project and many others assisted to build a clubhouse and handicapped-accessible facilities.

Challenger League:
We had 30 players at the game on Saturday and the Daily Journal carried the story on their website with 36 photos. Mary Jane Kinkade read a letter from a Challenger League parent to Joe Delgado thanking him and Rotary for what happiness baseball has brought to her son. This coming Saturday, our second game will be played at the field at West Avenue and Wheat Road. Plan to attend and see the fun first-hand. The games are fairly short and start at 3:00 PM.

P. Bill said three Vineland Rotarians were recognized at the District Conference this past weekend for their services to the District, Linda Foster, Dave Schad and Paul Blackstock.

We recently celebrated Paul Harris’ 140th birthday, founder of Rotary.

Ed Duffy and Gus Foster each were picked out of the audience by a celebrity impersonator. Ed was picked by Marilyn Monroe and Gus got to dance and sing with Tina Turner. You had to be at the District Conference to see it.

Jay Parks was welcomed back to the club after an accident. He fell and broke some ribs and vertebrae. He thanked members for their cards and said he was very happy for the procedure he went through because he is almost back to normal and it was not painful. Jay was back taking pictures and arranging the subjects as usual! Welcome back Jay!

Our Interact Advisor Melanie Druziako said the Interact Club needs role models. They celebrated Earth Day with photos on the website. The students would like guardians to accompany them to visit the orphanage in Santo Domingo. She thanked Kevin Bernhardt for the limousine service he provided.

Glenn Kahley said this Saturday, April 26th we will be doing Identifications for kids at the Johnstone School from 8AM until noon. .

Betsy said the Vineland Interact was well represented at the District Conference and their presentation was very professional and polished.

Today’s Program:

Today's Program
PE Betsy introduced today’s program, Mark Everett, the son of former Vineland Rotarian, Earle Everett. Mark has studied Vineland and the area economics for many years. He was the first director of the Cumberland County Improvement Authority and is a Senior Project Manager with the Alaimo Group. Originally from Vineland, he sited the current landfill and worked in City Hall with Mary Festa in the Planning Department.

He recounted a story of his father’s experiences chasing shop lifters when he was the manager of the Vineland Sears store. He said there were 5 major downtown economic development studies done in Vineland during the past 28 years. He highlighted the major points in our history when economic stimuli would have an impact on the future of the city. He said Vineland is experiencing good economics currently because there are no other major areas in the state where expansion can occur. He said the next 5 to 10 years will be critical. He said the key is development on Delsea Drive and Landis Avenue, establishment of “walkable” town centers and age restricted housing. He posed the question of what will happen if the new Walmart causes Sears to leave. Will that create a blighted urban section of town? He compared Vineland to Collingswood, New Brunswick, Millville and Glassboro. To be successful, the town has to be fully committed to the project.

Finemaster:
Bill Plick fined Sherry for her happy news of a grand daughter, 7 pounds 12 ounces! Congratulations, Sherry! Pres. Bill was good for a $5 fine as was P.P.

Today’s Program:
PE Betsy introduced today’s program on the Bayshore Discovery Project. Meghan Wren gave a very interesting presentation on the Project and the New Jersey’s Tall Ship, the Delaware Bay Schooner, AJ Meerwald. Meghan invited us to join her at a Port Norris Rotary Club meeting any Thursday at the Paper Waiter in Millville, 6:00 PM at the for social hour or 6:30 for the meeting.

She complimented our club on our activities, support of the Bayshore Discovery Project and our website. Two of our members were mentioned for their involvement with the project. Paige is their newest board member and Linda is a volunteer on the Meerwald.

The Bayshore Discovery Project educates the public about the heritage, culture, history and environment influences of the Delaware Bay. The Maurice River is the reason for Millville’s existence and early industry in Cumberland County. In Bivalve, many businesses depended on the oysters from the bay. Shipping sheds transferred oysters to railroads. The project is beginning to restore these buildings. They are considered one of the first “strip malls” because of the many industries and businesses housed in them.

The Delaware Estuary Program recognizes the habitat and importance of the wetlands. The program has been internationally recognized. A huge population of horseshoe crabs is dependent on this habitat.

The Bayshore Discovery Project offers a number of opportunities for our members. These include sailing on the schooner, spreading the word, sponsoring local schools classes or youth groups field trips, volunteering to work on the vessel, sponsorship of Bay Days, participation in Oyster Fest and joining the BDP.

After 8 years of restoration, the Meerwald received an award from the state in 2005 for restoration and was officially named NJ’s Tall Ship. They have on-board hands-on programs for children, class trips and summer camps that produce character building and teamwork for the children. They receive no state appropriations or support from the state. They have won grants based on competitive accomplishments.

A Delaware Bay Museum is being planned. Our club participated in Bay Days several years ago. The Port Norris Rotary enters a parade float during the celebration. The town is looking for additional participants and the Port Norris Club would welcome our participation. The Oyster Fest celebrates the 300th anniversary of the treaty between the Lenape Indians and the Swedes.

Today’s Program:
PE Betsy introduced todays program. Recently interviewed by CNBC, and son of Shaye Kotok, David Kotok was today’s speaker.

Mr. Kotok said the past 6-8 months have witnessed unprecedented market changes. Dysfunctional markets have become non-functional or seized markets. Tax-free municipal bonds are now providing higher interest rates than conventional equities. He explained how the “Ted Spread” demonstrates the differences between the Euro and T-Bill. Banks have stopped trusting each other and have raised lending rates. The Fed is now making direct loans to banks, and this is approaching $100 billion today. Similarly the Fed has liberalized the rules and is allowing the capital markets to come directly to them. This will amount to approximately a $200 billion market.

The potentially disasterous failure of Bear Stearns was averted by the Fed by brokering a take-over by JP Morgan Chase through a $30 billion loan. The Fed accepted collateral from JP Morgan Chase in the form of higher quality securities for the loan. The Fed would not take junk bonds. The approval of the buyout is still up to the shareholders of JP Morgan Chase, but already credit spreads are narrowing and markets are un-seizing.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Mr. Kotok quipped that the bottom of the market was nearing when you get a sick feeling in your stomach. He feels we hit the bottom during the period of January 18-22 of this year and that there will be some recovery later this year. He feels the past 10 to 15 years of speculation into the single-family housing market is the cause of this market’s dysfunction and he blames a lot of it on congress.

Mr. Kotok announced the establishment of a new scholarship honoring his mother, Shaye Kotok. As with the Leslie Kotok scholarship, it will be administered through Rotary.

Today’s Program:

President Bill introduced President Elect Betsy who introduced today’s speaker, Dave Schad. Dave gave us an interesting presentation with pictures on a work trip he recently took with a church group to an orphanage in Honduras.

Dave said Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Americas. With 6.6 million people, the country has an 85% poverty rate. About ½ of the children of the country are malnourished. Products of the country are coffee, bananas and wood carvings by artisans. Soccer (“football”) is a national preoccupation.

The orphanage is located 4,500’ above sea level. Because of the dryer cooler air, they are not bothered by insects and diseases from the lower climates of the country. The orphanage is home to 105 children ranging in age from infants to 15-18 years old. Dave’s group helped by doing concrete work, tile work, painting and installing windows. Most construction is concrete because of the termite problems. Like the country, the orphanage is very clean. He said the children are very happy and get along very well. This was Dave’s third trip to this location and it brings home the facts of how very big the world is, how much we all have to offer and how much opportunity there is to do good.

Today’s Program:
Alan Dickinson introduced today’s program, the Rowan University Chapter of Engineers without Borders, USA. Faculty Advisor, Dr. Yusef Mehta introduced the group and briefly outlined the role Rowan has played in this humanitarian organization. Dr. Jess Everett, son of former Vineland Rotarian Earl Everett was introduced and he spoke briefly about the student’s work. There are about 15 to 20 members at Rowan at this time.

Three student engineers presented projects of Rowan and talked about their involvement. Primarily addressing the needs of needy communities, they were instrumental in providing a renewable source of potable water for El Amaton and La Ceiba in El Salvador, and to a town in Senagal in West Africa. It is estimated that one billion people are without access to good potable water.

Two projects have been completed for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, a design guide and report for a geothermal plant and fish hatchery. A second project design was completed for a desalination plant for the tribe’s farmers.

The group needs $24,000 for the El Salvador project. They are looking for advisors for their upcoming trip to El Salvador March 17-22 and for the trip to Senagal the last two weeks in May.

Finemaster:
Linda Foster paid for her happy news. Her son Chris, a Rowan University engineering graduate, recently received an award as a “World Class Engineer” from Boeing. Among the other fines, Diana and her visitor Kristin were fined $5. Kristin was a former employee of the finemaster. Charlie Loyle was fined a small fine for a small picture of him in the paper. The finemaster’s cell phone policy was explained in detail: All cell phone related fines are $5.
